Nominations open for Class of 2023

The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for its next class of inductees to join the more than 200 distinguished members representing the best of Indiana journalism.

Anyone may nominate a distinguished journalist with Hoosier ties. All nomination instructions, including an online form, are on the website. The deadline is Oct. 31, 2022.

“We are pleased to be back on track with the nomination process after a successful induction earlier this year,” said Larry Taylor, executive director for the hall. “We are looking forward to reviewing nominations of some of the best and brightest journalists the state has produced.”

The hall inducted five new members April 9, 2022, after suspending ceremonies four times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now the hall will resume its traditional schedule of accepting nominations through October with an induction ceremony set for the following spring.

The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame was established in 1966 by the Indiana Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. It is administered by a 17-member board of directors that includes individuals associated with journalism and representatives of SPJ campus and professional chapters throughout the state.

The IJHF board of directors reviews the complete nomination materials after the deadline for submissions. Each member selects his or her 12 leading candidates for nomination and forwards the choices to the executive director for tallying.

“It sounds like hyperbole, but if every journalist who deserves to be in the IJHF could be inducted, we would have quarterly classes of 50 instead of yearly classes of five,” said Stephanie Salter, board president. “From the once-overlooked pioneers to the women and men currently working in print, digital and broadcast, the supply of outstanding news people with strong ties to Indiana seems limitless. The only easy part of the selection process is we know we can’t make a mistake.”

The 12 leading nominations are reviewed by the full board of directors along with any supplemental material at a meeting in Indianapolis by late November. The new class of inductees, usually five to six individuals, are selected and notified immediately of the plans for their induction into the hall of fame.

The hall also awards the John P. McMeel Distinguished Service to Journalism Award to honor individuals for outstanding career contributions that support Indiana journalism in ancillary means. The contributions can be made, for example, through the areas of technology, business or freedom of information. See the website for nomination instructions. Deadline also is Oct. 31, 2022.
