Induction luncheon to feature IPCF winners
Two long-time Indiana journalism groups will honor legendary journalists and recognize talented college students during a joint event Oct. 3 in Indianapolis.
The Indiana Journalism Legacy Luncheon will feature the induction of five new members to the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame and will introduce college students competing in the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation’s annual Thomas R. Keating Writing Competition that weekend. The event is set for 11 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station.
“We are looking forward to an event that will celebrate journalism and journalists in Indiana, ranging across a wide spectrum of experiences,” said IJHF board president Steve Key.
Tickets are on sale now, with all details on the website. Attendees may purchase individual tickets or tables. Sponsorships at several levels also are available.
Formed in 1966, IJHF honors achievements of journalists with Indiana connections. It is a nonprofit that partners with Butler University, where its archives are housed.
The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame will induct five new members: the late Angelo Angelopolous, sportswriter for the Indianapolis News; David Haugh, sports journalist at the South Bend Tribune and The Chicago Tribune; Gerry Lanosga, award-winning print and broadcast investigative journalist; Sue Morrow, an award-winning visual journalist at top newspapers in the country and a leader of photojournalism organizations; and the late Mary Tandy, one of few Black women to operate a weekly metropolitan newspaper.
The nonprofit Indianapolis Press Club Foundation focuses on raising funds to provide scholarships, grants and other opportunities to college student journalists and communicators. The Keating competition is one of those.
The Keating competition will get under way the same weekend. Student journalists representing college journalism programs around the state will participate in the early afternoon event before receiving their assignments as part of the Keating competition. They’ll report, write and file their stories that evening.
“What an honor to celebrate careers that shaped Indiana journalism in the same room where we will recognize students who will build upon and grow that legacy," said Michael Sanserino, president of the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation. "These hall of fame honorees served and informed their communities for decades, and these students will carry that calling forward for years to come. Bringing both groups together felt like the right way to recognize Indiana journalism as a whole.”

The Indianapolis Press Club Foundation is dedicated to raising and managing funds to provide scholarships, journalism awards and paid summer fellowships for deserving journalism students at Indiana colleges and universities.
IPCF established this annual contest in 1986 as a tribute to former Indianapolis Star columnist Thomas R. Keating. The competition celebrates great storytelling across multiple genres. Students are encouraged to submit their best published piece of journalism – news, features, sports or columns – to be considered for 10 spots in the competition.
